Alert! Divorce hurts men worse then women!

This may come as startling news to a public that has been led to believe that women are the ones who suffer financially postdivorce, not men. But the data show otherwise, according to an exhaustive study of the subject by Sanford L. Braver, a professor of psychology at Arizona State University and author of Divorced Dads: Shattering the Myths. “The man is in a lot poorer condition than the popular media portray,” he says. “This idea of the swinging, happy-go-lucky, no-worries single guy in a bar…that’s just not it at all.” The misconception was fueled by Harvard professor Lenore Weitzman’s widely cited book, The Divorce Revolution: The Unexpected Social and Economic Consequences for Women and Children in America.

Weitzman’s 1985 tome claimed that postdivorce women and children suffer on average a 73 percent drop in their standard of living, while the divorced men’s standard of living increased by 42 percent. Years later, Weitzman acknowledged a math error; the actual difference was 27 percent and 10 percent, respectively. But Braver says even that figure is based on severely flawed calculations. Weitzman and other social scientists ignored men’s expenses—the tab for replacing everything from the bed to the TV to the house—as well as the routine costs of helping to raise the children, beyond child support. Even the tax code favors women: Not only is child support not tax deductible for fathers, but a custodial mother can take a $1,000 per child tax credit; the father cannot, even if he’s paying. As “head of the household,” the mother gets a lower tax rate and can claim the children as exemptions. If the ex-wife remarries, she is still entitled to child support, even if she marries a billionaire. Indeed, every year men are actually thrown in jail for failing to meet their child-support obligations. In the state of Michigan alone, nearly 3,000 men were locked up for that offense in 2005.

Northwest Wisconsin's Online Newspaper!

When the first 16-page issue of the Inter-County Leader rolled off the presses in the early morning hours of November 2, 1933, the headlines across the front page read "Farmers' Strike Called Off Temporarily." Those words were very significant of the times in which the paper came into being, and perhaps of the background for organizational efforts to produce this new newspaper.

The fact that farmers were organizing a nationwide strike to hold all farm produce off the market was some indication of troublesome times which were common throughout the nation during the Great Depression.

By November 1933 - with help from $5 from each interested farmer - the Leader was born.

Some of the original organizers were members of the Polk County Farmers Holiday Association, the principal promoter for the farm strike called in the fall of 1933. Included were D.D. Kennedy, president of the Polk County Holiday Association; George An Nelson of Milltown; Herb Mittelsdorf of Farmington; J.W. Hanson of Luck; J.W. Bosley of Beaver; F.W. Wiese of Eureka; Ed McKenzie of Balsam Lake; and Marius Dueholm of Bone Lake.

Many Farmers Union members were also involved in both the Farm Holiday movement and the development of the Leader.

The Inter-County Leader is a weekly newspaper published each Wednesday at Frederic, Wis. It is a cooperative-owned newspaper operated by the Inter-County Cooperative Publishing Association

I don't want America to end up like Nazi Germany!

A report in the New York Times reveals that the FCC is moving forward with a secret timeline to vote on sweeping changes to media ownership rules. This is just the most recent in a long series of FCC moves to avoid public scrutiny.

I strongly urge you to call for Congressional oversight hearings on media ownership. Media is a life-and-death issue for me and my community, and the FCC has not done enough to study the impact that more consolidation would have on diversity, localism, and competition. The FCC is poised to make the same mistake it made in 2003, when it ignored unprecedented public outcry, and had to be reined in by the courts.

Help hold the FCC accountable. Please call immediately for oversight hearings on media ownership.

Pair Programming vs. Code Reviews

The idea is two developers work on the same machine. Both have keyboard and mouse. At any given time one is driver and the other navigator. The roles switch either every hour, or whenever really. The driver codes, the navigator is reading, checking, spell-checking and sanity testing the code, whilst thinking through problems and where to go next. If the driver hits a problem, there are two people to find a solution, and one of the two usually has a good idea.

If only one developer/programmer reads this, then my job is done.

The United States' second-richest man has delivered a blunt message to the Bush administration: he wants to pay more tax.

Warren Buffett, the famous investor known as the "Sage of Omaha", has complained that he pays a lower rate of tax than any of his staff - including his receptionist. Mr Buffett, who is worth an estimated $52bn (£25bn), said: "The taxation system has tilted towards the rich and away from the middle class in the last 10 years. It's dramatic; I don't think it's appreciated and I think it should be addressed."

Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks This Weekend

(AP) -- Summer's annual meteor shower promises to put on a dazzling show when it peaks this weekend - provided you're far from city lights. With no moon in sight to interfere with the Perseid meteor shower, skygazers can expect to spot streaking fireballs late Sunday into dawn Monday regardless of time zone. Astronomers estimate as many as 60 meteors per hour could flit across the sky at the shower's peak.
This year's sky show comes with an added bonus: Mars will be visible as a bright red dot in the northeastern sky.

"We have front-row seats this year," said Kelly Beatty, executive editor of Sky & Telescope magazine.

Last year's Perseid shower was somewhat of a dud because the moon's glare washed out many of the faint meteors. This weekend's meteor shower coincides with a new moon, which means the skies will be dark and perfect for viewing meteors.

Experts offer some tips to get the most out of nature's fireworks: Since Perseid meteors can be seen from any direction in the sky, viewers should pick out a dark patch of sky free of light pollution and wait for the meteors to appear.

Dim meteors appear as a momentary flash of light while the brighter ones leave a glowing streak. The number of Perseids zipping across the sky should increase steadily through the night, peaking just before sunrise. Although the peak occurs this weekend, the Perseids are visible for several nights after that.

Unlike other celestial sightings that require a telescope or binoculars, the best way to watch a meteor shower is with the naked eye.

Email ettiquette tips: keeping your email cool - HP Small and Medium Business

Before you send

1. Always think twice

Okay, you’re angry or upset. Write your e-mail. Save it. Read it. Go have a coffee. Read it again. Then ask yourself the big question – is it really worth sending? Chances are it isn’t.

2. Keep it clean

Remember that everyone will interpret things differently. Jokes, pictures and lewd comments can truly offend.

3. Empathise with the reader

Think of the things you don’t like to receive in an e-mail. For example, are people always shouting IMPORTANT things in upper case, using hundreds of abbreviations and emoticons, sending large attachments? If you don’t like receiving certain things, why send them to others?

4. Check the 'send to' list before you send

Believe it or not, everyone doesn’t want to read your e-mail and you just might be sending your scathing thoughts about someone to everyone.

Tip: Draft your e-mail first – leaving who it is intended for in the To: line blank. If you accidentally hit “send” before you actually intended to, a prompt will remind you to input the recipient’s e-mail address. It’s a direct way to make sure your messages don’t go out before you want them to and gives you time to consider who really needs to be on the receiving end of the message.

5. Be polite

Whether at your desk or texting a message from your phone, saying ‘hello’ and ‘thanks’ in the introduction, anywhere throughout, or even waiting until the end of the message can make a huge difference.

6. Resist temptation

Yes, something was said. Yes, maybe you were criticized. Perhaps you were CC’d on an exchange between a colleague and your boss. How you respond next will say everything about you. Remember, once something is said, it can never be taken back.

7. See Point 1.
