Dangers of distracted driving - Wisconsin Department of Transportation

Dangers of distracted driving

Every time you drive, you are legally and morally responsible for safely operating a potentially destructive - and even deadly - force. Any lapse in attention to traffic or road conditions is a grave danger to you, your passengers and everyone else on the road.

In an attempt to save time by multitasking behind the wheel, drivers may choose to eat a meal, search for items in the glove box, use a cell phone, or comb their hair while staring in the rear view mirror. Their attention is focused everywhere except where it should be - on the road.

Research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that in 2008 alone nearly 6,000 people were killed and more than a half million people were injured nationwide in crashes involving a distracted driver. Almost 20 percent of all crashes that same year involved some type of distraction.

Because of the dangers of distracted driving, Wisconsin state law prohibits drivers from being "so engaged or occupied as to interfere with the safe driving of that vehicle."

State law bans texting while driving
Texting with a cell phone while driving recently has become a more prevalent and dangerous form of distracted driving because it diverts a driver's eyes, hands, and mind - for a significant amount of time - from the safe operation of the vehicle.

Wisconsin state law now forbids driving "any motor vehicle while composing or sending an electronic text message or an electronic mail message." Wisconsin's texting ban is a primary enforcement law, which means law enforcement officers may stop motorists suspected of this offense alone.

Texting and Web Access

It is illegal for drivers of all ages to compose, read, or send electronic messages or access the Internet on a wireless device when the vehicle is in motion or part of traffic. This includes being stopped in traffic or at a light.
The law does not apply to devices that are permanently affixed to the vehicle or global positioning or navigation systems.

Cell Phone Use and Texting

  • It is illegal for drivers under age 18 to use a cell phone, whether hand-held or hands-free — except to call 911 in an emergency.
  • Cell phone use is totally banned for school bus drivers.

Reckless or Careless Driving

  • Distracted drivers can be ticketed for reckless or careless driving when their actions demonstrate a disregard for the safety or rights of others.

By signing these bills into law, Gov. Walker has opened up another front in the Republican war on women. Polaris plans to add 89 jobs in Osceola |

The Polaris sport vehicle plant in Osceola said it would create 89 new jobs over the next three years.

Gov. Scott Walker announced Thursday that the firm will get $595,000 in tax breaks if all the jobs are added on schedule.

Polaris is based in Medina, Minn. The expansion was made possible by its recent acquisitions of Indian Motorcycles, GEM electrical neighborhood vehicles and other new products.

State officials say many of the new jobs will be highly skilled positions like testing engineers and product developers.

Some of the new jobs will be moved from a Polaris plant in Wyoming, Minn., that’s running at capacity. But the firm says most of the jobs will be new.

About 140 people now work at Osceola. But that’s still a fraction of the 500-plus workers the plant had two years ago when Polaris first said would close Osceola and move many of the workers to Mexico.

Senate Bill Has IT Pro Overtime Pay in Crosshairs - Julio Urquidi

Senate bill to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act would eliminate overtime pay for many IT workers.

By Julio Urquidi February 24, 2012 10:24 AM

I once worked 33+ hours straight trying to get a patient documentation system back online. As a gift for my hard work, via upper management, my CIO gave me 15 dollars worth of coffee shop gift cards as part of an “employee retention” program. Apparently, I was going to need the energy from the coffee as I had to cancel my vacation plans and stick around for the rest of the week in case we had any outage-related problems. Since I was a “manager-class” employee (managing computers, not people), I wasn’t compensated for my time and was asked to remain available for the rest of the week.

Of course, this wasn’t the only time that I worked long hours. Other times I worked late out of pride and to a certain degree, I wanted to prove my worth to and for the enterprise (call me Boxer). That one particular time, though, the fact that it was pretty much uncompensated hurt the most. I lost personal time at home, had to skip classes and couldn’t do a lot of the after-hour activities I enjoyed.

Those gift cards didn’t make me feel better, either. Instead, I felt they were given to keep me working, like hay to a horse the day before the big plow.
